Partnering for the First 1,000 Days: AGFI and San Miguel Foundation Bring Early Literacy to Families
The first 1,000 days of a child’s life are among the most critical stages of growth and development. During this period, providing mothers and children with proper nutrition, care, and support can help lay the foundation for a healthier and brighter future.
Adarna Group Foundation, Inc. (AGFI) believes that supporting a child’s development goes beyond physical health. Early experiences with language, stories, and books can help nurture curiosity, strengthen communication, spark imagination, and foster a lifelong love for learning.
With this shared vision, San Miguel Foods, San Miguel Foundation, and Adarna Group Foundation, Inc. partnered to launch the third phase of the Happy si Mommy, Malusog si Baby Program, which focuses on early literacy through read-aloud workshops for parents.

The latest phase kicked off on July 29, 2026, in Bataan and will run until November in different areas across the country. The program is expected to reach more than 1,000 parents across implementation sites, bringing together nutrition and literacy support to help families nurture their young children.
AGFI Executive Director Con Estrella facilitated a Pagbasa nang Pabigkas workshop for mothers, alongside an interactive storytelling session for children led by San Miguel Foods employees. Through the workshop, mothers learned how reading aloud, conversations, and playful interactions can support their children’s early language and literacy development while strengthening the bond between parent and child.

AGFI and SMF also made sure that the joy of reading would continue beyond the event. To encourage families to continue reading at home, each family received a board book and a parent guide to help families make reading a meaningful part of everyday life.

Through its partnership with SMF, AGFI remains committed to its advocacy that nurturing a child during the first 1,000 days is a shared responsibility. By bringing together nutrition and early literacy, the partnership helps create stronger foundations for children’s development.
The partnership further demonstrates how different organizations can contribute their respective expertise and resources to address the needs of children during the first 1,000 days. Combining health, nutrition, and early literacy allows partners to address multiple areas of early childhood development through a coordinated approach.
